When my journey took a new direction

It started on the 27th July 2018.

I went to the GP for something completely unrelated. Whilst there, my breathing was unusually heavy and as a result, the doctor took my blood pressure. After four attempts, she realised my oxygen sats were 84% – usually they would be between 91 and 92%.

She quickly wrote a note for me to take to A&E and we discussed which hospital would be best to go to. (I was going nowhere though, until I’d watched my niece in her ballet show! So much to my GP’s annoyance, I travelled to A&E via the ballet. It was worth every minute, she was a superstar 🌟)

After a quick assessment, I was admitted to hospital and told I would be there for the weekend.

I was put into a ward with three other ladies – much older than me – and hooked up to oxygen to help get my sats up. It's unusual for someone as young as me to find themselves in the cardiac ward. I find it’s times like those when your inner child comes out and all you want is your mummy!

I spent a frustrating weekend hooked up to the oxygen, using a portable tank when I needed to leave my bed. On the second night, however, I was given my own room, which was total luxury 💕.

My nieces and nephews came to see me and kindly lent me their iPad, which introduced me to the world of Netflix. I spent the rest of the weekend losing myself in rom-coms and entertaining my incredible friends when they came to visit.

I was discharged on Monday afternoon after I had seen my consultants. There had been some discussion about 'collaterals' but as I’d never heard of them, I didn't think much of them. I left hospital in blissful ignorance of what was to come...

As I look back now I often find myself wondering: would I even be here if it weren't for that trip to the GP?
